We prove the formula of Bruckner and Vostokov for the classical Hilbert symbol, following a method of Kato, which employs cristalline cohomology theory. However, we don't presume anything exceeding classical number theory. We show that, up to a factor +/-1, this formula essentially holds also in the case p = 2. Using this result, we can easily prove for example the complete classical formulas for the biquadratic Hilbert symbol over the field Q(2)(root-1).
