Retinoic acid (vitamin A acid) in acetonitrile shows a very weak fluorescence which originates from the lowestenergy pi pi* singlet of the polyene chain. In the presence of several metal salts, Hg(acetate)(2), Ag(CF3COO) and ZnCl2, this fluorescence undergoes a slight spectral shift and becomes much more intense. The reason is not quite clear, but different effects may cause this fluorescence enhancement, e.g. energy increase of the nonemissive n pi* state by coordination at the carboxylic group, metal-olefin coordination and an increase of rigidity by organized structures.
