Abstract

Different laws try to protect young people from confrontation with media contents, which are assumed to posses ethically disorienting effects. On the other hand there is ample evidence that these aims are not realized because young people get the X-rated materials in a lot of cases. This raises the question if there is a connection between the consumption of certain media and delinquency. The relevant results in regard to print- and audiovisual media do substantiate direct and as well indirect links between delinquency and the use of violent contents. The effects can be well explained with the help of psychological and criminological theories, although there are some open research questions. The results lead to the question of defining the best methods to render this situation harmless (by methods of intervention or prevention). In this regard no additional legislative actions are proposed but measures are suggested to strengthen the responsibility of people producing media and to use the available psychological knowledge for pedagogical measures.
