The adsorption of phenol and 4-chlorophenol on oxides in aqueous solutions is strongly influenced by the cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride. At surfactant concentrations below the CMC, strong synergistic interaction effects on the adsorption are observed, whereas above the CMC, solubilisation of the phenols in micelles becomes an important competing effect. An approach is described for calculating the partition coefficients of the phenols between the bulk phase, the surface and the micelles.
