Abstract

The influence of the surface roughness on the reflectivity spectra of c-axis oriented layered superconducting materials is studied. Purely electrodynamic coupling between c-axis phonons and carriers in the a-b plane at the surface is shown to lead to the appearance of surface plasmon branches at the frequencies of c-axis longitudinal phonons. Roughness-induced excitation of surface plasmons by light causes dips in the reflectivity at normal incidence at frequencies close to the frequencies of c-axis longitudinal phonons.
