Abstract

According to our experiments and numerical calculations, when the tippe top is spun, in many cases it will take off from the ground and fly a few millimeters in the air. The impact on the ground can only be realistically described with a soft surface. Our model not only includes a soft surface with a linear restoring force but also takes the protruding pin into account. Consequently, four phases of motion are possible: (1) The principal sphere slides over the ground. (2) Free flight (no contact with the surface). (3) Contact of both the pin and the principal sphere with the surface. (4) The spin slides over the surface.
