Abstract

Glycogen, amylase (alpha-1,4-glucan 4-glucanohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.1) and alpha-glucosidase (alpha-D-glucoside glucohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.20) from cultured symbiotic Nostoc were partially purified and characterized; phosphorylase (alpha-1,4-glucan: orthophosphate glucosyltransferase, EC 2.4.1.1) activity was not detected. The role of these enzymes and of glycogen in glucose release by the cyanobiont is discussed.
