Abstract

The emission spectrum for surface acoustic phonons in a quantizing magnetic field normal to the two-dimensional electron gas (2D EG) plane is calculated. The phonon emission due to a deformational electron-phonon interaction in a GaAs/AlGaAs-type heterostructure is considered. It is shown that the exponential suppression of the emission of surface acoustic phonons occurs in a wide range of magnetic field variations omega(H) much greater than 2mc(R)2 (omega(H) is the cyclotron frequency, m is the electron mass and c(R) is the surface wave velocity). Thus the cooling of the hot 2D EG is only at the expense of the emission of bulk longitudinal and transverse acoustic phonons.
