Abstract

The transmission measurement of two intense picosecond pulses (wavelength lambda(L) = 527 nm) separated by 10 ns is applied to extract the quantum yield of triplet formation phi(T), the S(l) singlet excited state absorption cross-section sigma(ex), the T(l) triplet absorption cross-section sigma(T), and the T(n)-T(l) relaxation time tau(T) in the triplet system. Additionally the fluorescence quantum yields phi(F) are measured with a spectrofluorimeter. For eosin Y in water the determined data are phi(T) almost-equal-to 0.8, phi(F) almost-equal-to 0.2, sigma(ex) almost-equal-to 4.5 X 10(-17) cm2, sigma(T) almost-equal-to 5.5 X 10(-17) cm2, and tau(T) almost-equal-to 1 ps. The data for eosin Y in methanol are phi(T) almost-equal-to 0.56, phi(F) almost-equal-to 0.44, sigma(ex) almost-equal-to 3 X 10(-17) cm2, sigma(T) almost-equal-to 4.9 X 10(-17) cm2, and tau(T) almost-equal-to 1 ps.
