Abstract

Adsorption measurements confirmed the results of flotation experiments that iron-rich sphalerites adsorb xanthate with preference. This effect was observed especially in sphalerites activated with copper. In this case the adsorption leads to an increase in the negative potential values whereas other factors like alterations of the pH value or the oxidation power had no substantial effect on the electrophoretic mobility. Calorimetric measurements confirmed that the activation of the sphalerite surface with copper ions was more influenced by the iron content than by oxidation degree and that the xanthate occupancy was strongly dependent on copper activation and not on the iron content. From all the different experiments it can be concluded, that there are distinct differences in the flotation behaviour of individual sphalerites under certain conditions due to their iron contents. However, in view of the many factors influencing the flotation of sphalerite in practice it is hardly possible to adjust the flotation conditions directly on the iron contents.
