Abstract

By extensive numerical simulations within an itinerant description of the local magnetic properties, we find for computer models of amorphous iron with various densities at T = 0 K a strong correlation between the local value of the magnitude of the local magnetic moment for a given atom and the corresponding local volume, defined through the Voronoi polyhedron surrounding the atom considered. Both quantities vary strongly from site to site, however after averaging, the observed correlation of the local quantities agrees well with the global volume dependence of the atomic magnetic moment in the antiferromagnetic state of fcc iron, as calculated by Moruzzi et al.
