Abstract

The anaerobic, thermophilic archaebacterium, Pyrobaculum organotrophum was examined for the presence of lipoquinones. Thin layer chromatographic, HPLC, UV, mass spectroscopic, H-1- and C-13-NMR analysis showed that menaquinones were present in the form of MK-6H12 and a new lipoquinone with a partially cyclized side chain. The new compound was shown to correspond to 2-{14-[3-(1,5-dimethylhexyl)-cyclopentyl]-3,7,11-trimethyltetradecyl}-3-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone.
