Abstract

Lung abscess is defined as a circumscribed, suppurative inflammation followed by central tissue necrosis. Today it's occurrence is uncommon; despite of better diagnostic and therapeutic intervention it's prognosis is poor. Mortality ranges from 5% to 20%. Mortality due to multiple localization within the lung or general dissemination is closer to 50%. Aspiration is the most common cause. Central cavitating neoplasm is the most important differential diagnosis. Computed tomography is indicated for distinction of questionable x-ray findings. In addition to an extended course of antimicrobials and physical means bronchoscopy as a diagnostic and therapeutic measure is of great value in primarily conservative treatment. 10-30% require surgical therapy, which consists of lobectomy or wedge resection. In emergency cases percutaneous drainage is possible.
