Abstract

Bacterial urinary tract infections (UTI) are common in childhood. Appropriate choice of diagnostic procedures is dependent on the kind of infection. Urinary tract obstruction or vesico-ureteral reflux are risk factors for early recurrence of infection. Treatment of primary UTI seldom causes practical problems whereas frequent recurrent attacks are unpleasant and hazardous for the patient. Rapid detection, intense antibiotic treatment and close surveillance may be instituted in order to prevent severe renal parenchymal damage and its sequelae.
