Abstract

Communication: Chiral-polymer electrodes and electochemical sensor devices are two potential applications for carbohydrate-modified conducting polymers with a polyazulene backbone (see figure where R is a sugar). Carbohydrate modification, while providing the conducting polymer with molecular-targeting capability also lends water-solubility to the intrinsicly hydrophobic azulene group and should therefore enable chemistry and electropolymerization in aqueous solution.
