Abstract

A particulate enzyme preparation, isolated from in vitro cultivated Lilium testaceum bulbs, was shown to catalyse the biosynthesis of a water-soluble beta-1,4-glucomannan with a M(r) of 20 000. GDP[C-14]mannose and GDP[C-14]glucose were used as substrates for glucomannan biosynthesis. The incorporation of [C-14]mannose and/or [C-14]glucose into the polymer was significantly stimulated by low M(r) glucomannan (3500). The isolated membrane preparation also exhibited GDP-mannose/-glucose-epimerase activity.
