On three sets of politicians, the structural properties of three politically relevant attributes were examined, respectively. Goal of the study is to investigate whether with regard to these attributes the politicians can be represented on scales with strong uniqueness properties. The three attributes were 'aptitude for chancellor', 'greatness as statesman' and 'competence as politician'. For each set of politician 84 or 74 pair comparisions were carried out on one attribute, respectively. The data are analyzed by means of three probabilistic choice models: the BTL-model (Luce, 1959), preference trees (Tversky & Sattah, 1979) and elimination-by-aspects (Tversky, 1972), where the preceding model can be regarded as a special case of the succeeding one, respectively. For the two attributes 'aptitude for chancellor' and 'greatness as statesman' the BTL-model fits the data well. For the attribute 'competence as politician' the data show slight deviations from the model's predictions. However, the data for this attribute can be well described by means of a simple preference tree. For all three attributes, these results suggest high structural properties that theoretically guarantee the existence of ratio scales. The findings are discussed with respect to the construction of socalled "Politbarometer" (opinion poles).
