The Psychopathic Personality Inventory Revised (PPI-R) has so far only been validated in samples of healthy participants. This study investigates the validity of the PPI-R for the use in forensic populations. PPI-R scores of 152 male patients of forensic hospitals, 65 prisoners and 214 male students were compared. Reliabilities and-correlations with PCL-R scores were calculated. We found satisfying reliability scores for the PPI-R in both criminal samples. The forensic patients significantly differed in the PPI-R total score from the student sample. The PPI-R total score significantly correlated with the PCL-R total score and factor scores. Although the test criteria of the PPI-R were replicated in criminal samples, the use of sample-matched norms is suggested based on these results. Restrictions for the use in the context of predictions have to be respected.
