The conversion of P-4 with [(CpCo)-Co-Bn(CO)(2)] (Cp-Bn=C-5(CH2C6H5)(5)) under thermal conditions gives almost exclusively the P-10 complex [((CpCo)-Co-Bn)(4)(mu(4)-eta(4):eta(4):eta(2):eta(2):eta(1):eta(1)-P-10)]. However, its reaction with [(CpCo)-Co-Bn](n), under mild conditions afforded a mixture of products including the P-8 species [((CpCo)-Co-Bn)(3)(mu(3)-eta(4):eta(2):eta(2):eta(1):eta(1)-P-8)] and a rare Co-3 cluster [((CpCo)-Co-Bn)(2)Co(mu(3)-eta(5):eta(2):eta(1):eta(1)-C40H33)(mu-H)(mu(3)-H)]. The products were studied in solution by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry and, for some compounds in the solid state, by single crystal X-ray diffraction.
