Diseases whose symptoms suddenly and for a short period of time attack those affected can pose particular diagnostic challenges. Some of these are quite common, such as epilepsy and migraine, but most are rare, and some of these are discussed here. For many of these episodic, attack-like diseases, it has now been shown that they are caused by pathological changes in ion channels. Due to their rarity and often peculiar symptoms, they are many times misdiagnosed as psychogenic for years, thus blocking the path to effective treatment.
