Abstract

High quality of counseling is crucial for many educational settings. The analysis of counseling competence and of fostering its acquisition thus is a major challenge. Based on expertise research a model of counseling competence is developed. The model consists of the following components: (1) Declarative knowledge about facts and the efficiency of interventions and (2) personal resources (3) lead to reflection on experience which (4) enables the individual counselor to apply her/his knowledge adequately and effectively in different counseling situations. The domain of child guidance serves as an example to illustrate these components. To foster the acquisition of counseling competence, a combination of formal training programs with occasions to reflect on experiences with real-life cases is proposed. Thus applicable experiential knowledge emerges based on declarative knowledge.
